Northbound Leather Kinky Pride: Let Us Not Forget Our Roots …
2009 | 8:55 pm
There are times we, as a community, tend to forget our established proprietors (who supply us with our trappings and equipment) are also integral parts of our respective Communities. In Toronto, Northbound Leather has been in, around and an integral part of the fetish and SM communities in Southern Ontario for what seems like eons. Other companies hoping to gain a foothold and a following will forever be benchmarked beside the iconic Yonge Street landmark leather emporium.
Your Humble Narrator and True Friend would like to take but a moment to thank the event organizers, George and Anna, for a really lovely evening in the Distillery last Friday night at the Kinky Pride gathering. The night was truly perfect, weather wise – one could not have asked for better cooperation from Mistress Nature. The skies did open up for a period of time during the day – this is summer in Southern Ontario, after all – but by the time things got into full swing, the evening had turned perfect for a mostly-outdoor affair amongst the pyramidal flame pots and ancient cobblestones of the historic District. The ambience and the atmosphere created by the impeccably-kept old Gooderham and Worts whiskey factory (you can still catch a whiff of long-ago brewed spirits in the rain-tinted air) was truly … Magic.
I do believe that the absolute most fun for everyone in attendance … had to be the astonishment at some of the passers-by, each in turn suffering some severe form of whiplash, from taking in all the delicious, classy and elegant eye candy having a grand time with their peers on the cobbestone patio. Lady J, my beloved partner in this life, and I both were quite pleased and honoured to renew acquaintances with some old friends (some rather surprised she had moved to Toronto) and start new friendships with great people.
Our most special of “Thank Yous” to Ms. Marina Black in particular. The Lady was amazing last Friday night and Lady J and I both very grateful and honoured beyond compare for her hospitality, and her friendship. Legends are born from the minds and actions of great people: and this Lady is already well on her way to that elusive “legendary” status. From the bottom of our hearts, we send our love and our appreciations.
These days, I think that most of the general, world-wide SM Community take Northbound Leather completely for granted: They’ve been such an integral part of the Community for so long, that we just tend to assume that they’ll always “be there” to organize events, build our coveted apparel ensembles, and supply us some of our accoutrement’s. With the myriad of other options available for kinksters to prance about and ply their proclivities, I think it is sometimes easy to forget the contribution Northbound Leather has made to the success of our collective in the Gay and Lesbian and Heterosexual communities both. I think it’s easy to feel intimidated and therefore discount Northbound as a viable option: not just for attire and some equipment but as a venue host and event organizer as well. I know that last night, watching George and Anna (owners of Northbound Leather) tirelessly working to make sure each guest was having a good time (along with Ms. Black), I gained a new-found respect and admiration for all of them. Each year in the crisp autumn air, Northbound Leather hosts the largest annual gathering of fetish folk in the world at the immense Docks facility along Toronto’s storied waterfront. The quality of their smaller events does not suffer in comparison: George and Anna work very hard to try and provide a fantastic experience to each attendee who ventures out to any of their events – and the Kinky Pride Event was certainly no exception.
The previous evening, Northbound hosted a much smaller “Meet and Greet” at the Yonge Street store location, which was well attended by some of the more recognizable names that practice our lovely little pastime. It was wonderful to talk to some well known authors of important SM-related literature – and it was nice to see Midori, the Fetish Diva from the West Coast, out and enjoying the festivities amongst Toronto friends and admirers. The Lady is always so cordial, friendly – and the very personification of the word class - it is impossible not to instantly fall prey completely to her charms. On a personal note, the Friday Meet and Greet at the retail location was somewhat of a “Coming Out Party” for Lady J and most everyone in attendance made sure she was warmly welcomed. It is this kind of mutual respect and admiration for some of our iconographic figures that gives me great hope for the continued future of SM folk as a true, if not gigantic, extended family.
While the focus of Pride Week events on the Northbound calender have, in the past, tended to focus nearly exclusively on the Gay and Lesbian contingent, this year George and Anna decided to invite and include the general SM populace to join in the celebrations. While it is true that this decision may have ruffled some hard-core feathers amongst the Gay and Lesbian crowd, in general the gesture was received enthusiastically and was most welcomed by the majority of the party-goers in attendance. Lady J and I renewed acquaintances with new friends (pictured to the left) – who treated us with the utmost respect and welcomed us with open arms as one of their “own”. We loved their playfulness – and were deeply touched by the affections they both displayed for not only each other, but for all of their leather and latex comrades in arms that braved the early rain to take in the evening’s fun.

SM types are going to be hard pressed to match the enthusiasm and the boundless energy that is wrapped up in a little latex package known to all in the Toronto community as simply Anna. Amazingly, the lady took great care (as one of the hosts, naturally) to make sure all of their guests were taken care of. She did all of this, mind you, from the early morning until well into the wee hours of the next day, without complaint and an ever-present smile and enthusiasm that was unmatched – and all the while in skyscraper heels. Lady J and I were astonished at just how much energy and sheer joy she exhibited that evening. George, the other half of the Northbound team, was equally unmatched in energy and enthusiasm – and together they provided all party-goers a stark reminder of how grateful we as a Community should truly be for the efforts they both continually make to bring a little taste of leather and latex into the large and varied Toronto scene.
We are certainly looking forward to the rest of the summer’s events! Wherever you may call home in this world, we urge you to go out during your own Pride Week festivities (if they haven’t already passed, of course – but there’s always next year!) and support all aspects of our alternative communities. We also urge you to support the vendors and organizers, like Northbound Leather, who take the time to plan and organize such fabulous events that give all of us a chance to gather in the spirit of friendship … and be a part of a true family.

Here at Marquis America we are very excited about the Blacklickorish Latex fashion show at the upcoming Marquis Fetish Ball, on July 18 2009. We talk to Alyssa, Blacklickorish’s creator, about her background:

Erik von Gutenberg

The attraction to being empowered as a woman began to manifest itself during this “teenage rebellious” time. After experimenting with both submissive and dominant roles with boyfriends, she quickly realized that “bottoming was not (my) thing”. She was fortunate enough to have a long-term boyfriend whon was quite fine always taking the submissive role – and her education and experience as a Domina started to increase exponentially. She started to educate herself in everything to do with SM with the same passion and drive in which she lovingly worshipped the Greek goddesses of her literary childhood. She recalls with a smile the first time someone ever approached her, asking her ”if she was a Dominatrix.” She knew then exactly what path she wanted to take in this life.
“I was a leather girl when I started, growing up in a leather town,” she said. “At one time, Northbound Leather was the only supplier in town and, naturally, everyone involved in the scene relied on them for their clothes and toys – me included.” Latex was not on her radar – and was extremely limited in supply, and even then what was available was not quite of the standard one would find in large European centers. By the early 1990’s, though, she started noticing and taking a great interest in “some really beautiful latex pieces” she would see in various magazines and online. She describes herself as a “very physical Domina” and realized very quickly that latex wear allowed her to move more freely and expertly when involved in a session. Latex didn’t curb her range of motion: “Latex loves your body when you’re engaged in a physical and heavy scene. What’s more, my own collared pet further exposed me to a fresh perspective on latex used in tandem with heavy and sensual play. He has most definitely been my muse.”
In addition to being recognized as one of the latex world’s primary champions (especially in Toronto), Ms. Black is passionate about her art. “I’m totally addicted to bondage,” she said. “Everything to do with it, from rope work to fully inflatable body bags and sleep sacks, I’m in love with it!” She admits metal restraints are employed as a part of her repertoire – but she prefers the ambiance, anticipation and even delicious apprehension that occurs when engaging in wrapping a submissive up completely in ropes. “By the time they’re completely immobilized, I’ve taken the time to make sure they are comfortable with what is about to happen to them, building up the suspense and the sensuality of it all. They know they’re safe in my hands – even though they’re not going anywhere until I decide to release them and let them know they’re allowed to leave.” She loves being able to create what she describes as a “sensation overload” in her play – each client that comes for an SM experience in her chambers (Note: she is one of the very few professionals to boast both access to one of the most infamous establishments in the world, the Patricia Marsh House of Domination, as well as her own extremely well-equipped private studios) is guaranteed to appreciate her efforts, her time, and attention to detail. She is truly a “throwback”: she has a good base of dedicated clients and followers whom she considers to be “good friends” as well as exceptional devotees. This is rare: she isn’t seduced necessarily by the power of the almighty dollar, but by ensuring that each person that spends quality time with her will wish to be welcome back because of her insistence on a high degree of realism – and dedication to providing that authentic atmosphere and experience.
Ms. Marina Black also has a vocation outside of her professional domination practice. Since the year 1992, she has been trained in and is a much sought-after practitioner as a professional piercing artist. She also is proficient and popular as an Aromatherapist, and has even developed some of her own mixtures and cremes that have helped a myriad of people with a myriad of maladies. Both of these talents and skills blend well and help to compliment her as a Domina – and she is quite capable of combining all of her worlds, when needed, for those individuals who can appreciate her attentions.
You might have noticed by now that most

SM used to be considered the crème de la crème of sensual expression. When, and why, did SM turn into just another internet peepshow?
It is said, and with some factual basis, that it must have been a man who invented the high heeled shoes and boots that even the most basic businesswoman will don as a part of her day to day uniform. Leather attire has always been viewed as a symbol of sensual confidence, for men and women both. There are man-made materials today, some resembling even the shiniest latex or the supplest of leathers that are affordable for even the most casual of SM practitioners.
Publications such as Marquis America, at least, are dedicated to (and bringing back) the esteemed “look” and feel of the dedicated Domina and SM practitioner of old. There is an elegance, for instance, in seeing the visage of someone such as Marquis Adult Toy Reviewer and writer Mistress Darkniis finely attired in her chosen latex wear – and covered completely from head to toe. Mistress Darkniis is a Domina who truly understands the allure – and power – of the completely-clad female form. She uses that powerful imagery to maximum effect: She is developing quite a following ”Down East” amongst latex fetishists especially. Lady J (formerly of Halifax, Nova Scotia, but is as of this writing en route to a new life in Toronto, Ontario), pictured in a gorgeous full-length latex catsuit, full mask, red latex belt and red boots to the right, can be at times somewhat more liberal with the amount of skin she will show to a play partner – but it’s usually reliant on how much that particular partner has earned that privilege. It isn’t a “right” to see her bare shoulders if they haven’t earned the honor of such a reward during a Dominance encounter. Other contributors to this site, and to Marquis America itself, assuredly have similar, “old school” attitudes and sophistocated tastes in what they wear and how they choose to wear it. All of them have one thing in common, however:

At the beginning of 2005, Glenn brainstormed a huge all-weekend event as something bigger and badder for the 10-Year milestone. I think everyone thought that he was crazy. Well, he certainly is, but we assumed he had bitten off more than he could chew – after all, he always says that a single nightclub event takes everything he’s got, so how could he possibly consider throwing
Since that year and every year since, Glenn, the FF store, and the promotional machine of which I am an intimate part – we have all been raising the bar. Better venues, bigger sponsors, great entertainment, more parties, smart promotions, and of course a vibe that you get nowhere else in the world. FF really stands alone when it comes to an all-weekend fetish event. If you are coming from out of town, we really take care of every possible aspect for you from accommodations to transportation so that you can party instead of worry.
I left work at the bustling FF store on Friday evening very much excited about the weekend. I picked up a trunk-load of alcohol on the way home, packed a huge case full of toys and another full of clothes, and headed over to the hotel to check in. You could feel the energy in the air as you walked in the door. Something unreal was going to play out this weekend and I was already on the edge of my front row seat.
Back to the hotel, I hung out poolside at the official afterparty. This night wasn’t going to end until the sun was up. Back to my room, I hung out with friends and proceeded to drink my weight in Bombay Sapphire and orange juice until well into the next morning.
Saturday night took place at Purgatory which is the usual venue for FF monthly parties, so this one was simply titled “Alter Ego” and was meant to be a taste of the tradition and ritual that we do once a month of the second Saturday. This party was very similar to a monthly, only a bit bigger. This was the party where I expected to see all of my friends and have a good, social time. No bad surprises – this is exactly what I got. It was a great party in a cool venue. It was packed yet comfortably full so that there was plenty of space if you want to dance, chill or play. Purgatory is a club that really knows about fetish parties as FF has been there every month for the better part of two years.
Sunday, I woke up late and met up with friends to round up some food.
This place was decorated to the hilt, and I’m talking top to bottom. The place was comfortably packed and the partygoers were blowing up in time to the pulse of the music. The main event had come alive.
Back inside, I witnessed a multi-sexual fetish performance by beautiful queer couple Matt Havoc and Robin Rotten who joined FF’s own tattooed fetish diva Rebecca on stage. This show was simply incredible. At one moment Robin bent over Matt on stage, and the next moment, Rebecca took her place behind Robin simulating the sort of kinky sexual energy that really embodies this pansexual scene. Robin kissed Matt deeply and passionately – it was so sincere. Rebecca knelt down in front of them, masturbating her enormous latex cock as she watched. It was such a spectacular microcosm of the fetish scene in so many ways. Definitely a breathtaking spectacle for anyone in the audience regardless of their individual sexual orientation.
Without question, FF has somehow managed to throw it bigger and better this year than in any year in the history of this company, and it’s all because of you. In all honesty, the attendees made this the best one ever by coming out in droves. Even though times may be tough and money may be tighter than ever before, let there be no doubt – we still love to party, and nothing is going to stop us from doing what we love. We did it, and damn did we ever love doing it!
When one usually thinks of “Fetish Balls”, “Fetish Nights”, “Kinky Craft Fairs”, or “SM Related Business”, the usual first thought will invariably gravitate towards larger, more populated centers.
Recently, Your Humble Narrator and Only True friend had the distinct honor and privilege of participating in a rare, large community “first time” event. In point of fact, and with all bravado and self-gratification sent asunder for evermore, I was surprisingly requested not only to author, but to conduct and preside over a full Claiming Ceremony (or a “collaring”, if you’d prefer that term). The Claimant was an auburn-haired beauty (a near legend in Atlantic SM circles) known by all from Prince Edward Island to Alberta in Canada and in the United States from Maine to Pennsylvania. Her name is, simply, Lady J. Her Supplicant, no shrinking violet herself and truly the epitome and personification of the very word servant, is a striking young lady known throughout the region (by an approprietly chosen adjective rather than a proper noun) as Angelically Depraved.
The Ceremony went off with little a hitch, and was attended by most of the more recognizable personalities in the region. While the evenings festivities were tempered somewhat with the (earth-shattering and dismaying) news to the gathered throng that Lady J would be leaving their community to embark on a career in Toronto, one could not help but get caught up in the pageantry, the ritual, the aura, and the emotion of the proceedings. Lady J has been the very glue that has held this entire region together, as a community, for the better part of a decade – albeit and by her own emphatic word, ‘reluctantly’. While it is unmistakeable that she is considered by almost all fetish and SM enthusiasts in the region as their “Matriarch”, it is a phantom title that she has never been comfortable with, nor has she entirely embraced it in a self-serving standpoint. Everything that she has done – opening up a private SM club; coordinating events and evenings; relied up to be constantly objective and mete out communal justice when necessary; etc. – has been a tireless and selfless service to the entire community, and it is without question that the region is going to miss her teaching, her guidance … and her Love … when the fateful day arrives towards the end of June when she embarks on her new career, and life, in Toronto.
Of course, the Atlantic Region (like all communities) has their share of challenges and exasperations, egos that need to be assauged and disagreements that must be addressed. However, dear friends, I must confess: I have traveled and been witness to dozens of communities in a myriad of North American centers, on two oceans and everywhere in between, and never have I encountered a large community that was as close-knit, respectful of each other and shared (dare I say it) such a feeling of … Love. There is no question that it is the undying efforts of Lady J and her uncompromising insistance on providing that community a “home”, as well as instilling a healthy respect and desire for continued education and awareness, that is the largest single factor in shaping the very healthy future of SM along the East Coast. Before you start to think this missive is all about the “hero worship” of a single woman, allow me to introduce even more positive influences that have also contributed to the cohesion of their SM society, particularly in Halifax but also including the other Atlantic provinces and states.
The Atlantic Region has some very, very gifted people: The pages of the electronic version of Marquis have featured, on one occasion, an extremely dedicated and personable gentleman who goes by the name of Big D. There are few in the area who have such a complete understanding and knowledge of rope bondage, and his flagellation skills are truly second to none. He is also the local authority on Zentai and latex full enclosure, and has a collection of gas masks and “implements of persuasion” that would put almost every “professional” Dungeon to shame. His collection of electrical apparatus and accoutrements truly is second to none. He is approachable and personable – and simply does not have as great an ego to satisfy as some of his peers may have in the larger cities. Halifax also boasts an entire plethora and highly exceptional contingent of Dominent women: Lady Lynn (who acted as the Sergeant-At-Arms for the Claiming Ceremony) is a no-nonsense, extremely engaging and highly respected Domina who has collaborated on several occasions with Lady J to help “serve” the communities needs (I am still trying to figure out exactly just what the hell an SM Ladies Special is, but apparantly that’s somewhat of a local secret). A younger but no less determined lady who goes by the name Miss Jaded, together with her talented and passionate partner Ranger, are starting to take more of a leading role in community affairs – and while their efforts have encountered some (justified) resistance, no-one amongst their collective could fault their passion or their commitment to the community at large in helping to take over the reigns of leadership from Lady J.
It was a shock and somewhat of a complete surprise to realize that good, decent people – with unassuming names such as Sailor, seaside, Dom “B” and his lovely mate, known simply to all as “Wifey of B”, Master Vadim, Lord Trystan, Krizlee and Stegral are all considered vital and integral voices within their family – and it is a family. I name but a few of the personalities I so lovingly encountered during the celebratory weekend, but all are valued, respected, cherished … and heard … when they have a voice to raise for the good of them all. I mention but a tiny contingent of the many voices that have come together to make the Atlantic Community so very strong and so very tight. In an electronic age when decorum and decency seems to fly out the metaphorical window faster than a trapped and angry hornet, it is a true joy, privilege – and I admit a surprise – to know that at least one smaller community could be held as an exalted example of just how a large community can, in fact, work – when all the talents and experiences of personalities are joined together as that single voice.
In addition to the SM Community at large, one of the best design and “cottage industry” implement manufacturers is a company simply called
We all know them, these people. We know that they sail our ships, drive our trucks, manage our stores. We say hello to them passing down opposite sides of the street and we wave good-night to them at the end of the day. They are our neighbors, our friends – and even in some cases our family. It is a common “bond”, you’ll pardon the pun, that all of us who have elected to pursue this peculiar proclivity, warmly share. When a community icon departs, or tragically falls, it is left to the other members of the family to pick up the teachings and the wisdom that they left them – and to do honor to that icon, and their wishes and desires, by steadfastly following in their bootsteps. In that way, they can perhaps collectively think “What would our beloved leader have done?” and act accordingly.

The look dovetails neatly with traditional fetish, because it contains so many similar elements- extreme, body-conscious fashions, fishnet or striped stockings, corsets and other binding garments, leather protective gear, and a dramatic palette featuring black, white and red.
In truth, the connotation of the titles ‘Master’ and ‘Mistress’ also tend to indicate wealth, privilege and ownership. The obvious and negative association with the word ‘Master’ harkins to times when human beings actually bought, sold, owned and worked other human beings as nothing more than property – no different in mindset, for those times, than buying a horse. Naturally, the trade and institution of human slavery effectively ended with the end of the American Civil War in 1865: and yet the honorifics of the time have been somewhat modified, sanitized and been deemed as acceptable usage among those who venture into the SM realm.
If you’re a “Goddess” or a “Princess” the moment you stop behaving like a “Goddess” or a “Princess” you have lost all your credibility. These women should stop setting themselves up on so high a pedestal, because as the saying goes, that can only lead to a single inevitability: a very long, hard and unpleasant fall from casuistic grace.

In 1962, an English linguist and extremely prolific playwright and author by the name of Anthony Burgess (born John Burgess Wilson, 1917 – 1993) penned what has come to be known as one of the truly great and landmark novels of the 20th Century. The book was A Clockwork Orange, and no tome yet adapted for the screen has created both such a devout following and illicited such a raging controversy over the past half-century. Clearly a full decade before the epic 1972 film version of the same name (starring the irrepressible Malcolm MacDowell in the unforgettable role of the violence-addicted, Beethoven-loving, soon-to-be-forcefully reformed teenage hoodlum Alex DeLarge), contingents of head-to-toe white dressed and suspender wearing, combat-booted and bowler-hatted “Droogies” started infiltrating the London and Manchester pubs and nightclubs. Some of the devotees even sported the “Droogs” trademark athletic supporters (”cod pieces”) - worn on the outside of their stark-white trousers – while enjoying a pint or twelve in their favorite shlagas (”clubs”). When the Stanley Kubrick film eventually made its way to global cinema screens (and not without generating an immense amount of controversy revolving around its original “X” rating due to a rather horrific and terribly graphic home invasion scene), the stark and strangely alluring aesthetic of the anti-hero’s chosen trappings became a continuously ingrained staple at costume and fetish events – and continue to be so, nearly four decades later.
Despite the original author’s protestations to the contrary, A Clockwork Orange, both as an original book and landmark film, have never failed to grasp the imagination of many a costume and fetish aficiando. Women have even started to highly sensualize the usually-drab pure “whiteness” of the costume – and couples out for an evening of revelry cannot help but to look striking (no pun intended, of course) in their matching bowler hat, black boots, “cod piece” and walking cane ensembles. Fashion and fetish models alike have taken the “look” to an even higher artform – and the internet has seen rise to some of the most visually stunning and admirable practitioners of “High Droog Fashion”. There have even been “Clockwork Theme Wedding Albums” recently populating numerous European and North American-based web sites. While it is obviously easier to put together a groom’s attire for such a momentous occasion, trying to come up with an appropriately-themed wedding dress and make-up ensemble can be a very difficult challenge indeed – but that challenge has been met and matched with some incredibly inventive, appropriate and true to the aesthetic and yet undeniably elegant and classic (in their own way) bridal gowns and trains. All things considered, very high praise for an author who wrote the original manuscript decades before most of these Clockwork Acolytes were even born, and even higher praise for a visual design from a 1972 film that continues to be one of the most rented, revered and reviewed in our video rental outlets.

Founded in 2003, Fierce Couture is the result of Tressa Williams’ endless experiments with non-traditional materials and construction techniques. Drawing on a diverse background in academia (a degree in art and architectural history from Wesleyan University and dress theory studies at NYU), men’s tailoring, and costuming, Williams’ work explores the relationship between the graphic line and the three-dimensional body. Her designs utilize the tactile qualities of latex to play with shape, form, and color, creating garments that are sculptural and unexpected.
Her work came to the attention of leading emerging artist presenter GenArt and was featured as one of their Fresh Faces in Fashion in 2004 where she showed a collection entirely made of latex. Since then, Fierce Couture has shown in London, Berlin, and across the United States.
After relocating to Los Angeles in 2005, the studio increased its involvement with the entertainment industry – providing garments for film, music videos, and photo shoots in addition to continuing to produce new collections and custom designs.

Naturally, we cannot leave this dialogue without mentioning one of the more sly, secretive and strangely alluring Star Trek representations that manage to pop up at the conventions and film openings. In 1966, the original two-hour pilot for Star Trek was filmed – sans Captain Kirk. The original pilot episode featured a starship Captain named Christopher Pike, and fans of the original series will remember with great reverence that the original pilot was smartly incorporated into a two-part episode two years later, and called The Menagerie.
